Signs of a Fungal Nail Infection
According to the NHS, a fungal nail infection can affect part or all of a nail, and the nail can become:
- Thickened
- Discoloured
- Brittle
- Crumbly
It is usually not serious, but it can take a long time to improve, and other nail problems can look similar. That is why every treatment plan starts with an examination and an in-clinic test.

Fungal Nail Treatment: Your Questions Answered
The NHS describes a fungal nail infection as making the nail thickened, discoloured, brittle and crumbly. Other nail problems can look similar, which is why we test in clinic before recommending treatment. You can read more on the NHS fungal nail infection page.
Months rather than weeks. NHS guidance says antifungal nail treatments need to be used for 6 to 12 months, and it may take several months before you start to see an improvement. Toenails also grow slowly, so it takes time for a healthier-looking nail to grow through. We will talk you through what to expect at your assessment.

No, you can book with us directly. The NHS advises seeing a GP if the infection has spread to other nails, if treatment has not worked, or if you have diabetes or a weakened immune system. If we think you should see your GP, we will tell you.
Yes, please tell us when you book. Foot problems can be more serious if you have diabetes, so the NHS also recommends speaking to your GP about a fungal nail infection. Our winter diabetic foot check complements your NHS annual foot review and does not replace it.
